subject: Treatment For Adult Acne [print this page]

Acne can occur in anyone of any age, although it is most frequently adolescents and teenagers that suffer from the condition. This is probably the main reason why there doesn't seem to be as many adult acne treatments on the market, compared to acne treatment solutions geared towards a younger market. Causing a great deal of embarrassment, discomfort, and sometimes even pain, an acne attack is one of the worse parts of being a teenager.

Of course, this doesn't mean that adult acne is any easier to deal with. All the pain and discomfort, and the embarrassment that characterizes the condition during the adolescent years manifest themselves in almost equal severity in grown ups. It is also a bit trickier to find effective treatments for adult acne, since most products on the market are intended for the treatment of acne in teenagers, even if there is no indication to that effect in the products' marketing.

The most important thing to keep in mind in adult acne treatment is that adults generally have much drier skin than teenagers. This means that using acne treatment solutions geared towards teenagers' oilier skin may have undesired effects when used as part of an adult acne treatment program. Many adults have therefore resorted to trying out many different products without getting any closer to finding appropriate adult acne treatments. Here are a few products that may be effective as part of an overall adult acne treatment program.

Facial cleansers. You really have to be careful about choosing such products, since many of them are intended for adolescents rather than for adults. Two products worth trying out are Cetaphil and Aquanil, both of which are quite gentle on the drier skin of adults. These two products are safe and effective alternatives to harsh chemical based gels and products that rely on beads or granules for their cleansing effect.

An effective ingredient found in many adult acne treatments is Retinol. You can use such products in order to clear out pores and to improve the general condition of the skin. You can also use products that contain salicylic acid and glycolic acid to treat many of the more obvious effects of acne. Such products can reduce discoloration of key areas of the skin and even improve the appearance of acne scars.

Acne is often caused by bacteria on the skin and in the pores, which is why many treatments for adult acne aim to cleanse the pores of these contaminants. A particularly effective ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, which is found in many over-the-counter products. These products can be remarkably effective at cleansing the pores of bacteria that can bring on an acne attack.

As you can see, there are many treatments for adult acne available, and these are only the topical solutions commonly available in pharmacies and groceries practically anywhere in the world. The good news is that such products are relatively inexpensive, so you should be able to try out a few until you find one that works best for you.
