subject: Tips To Clean Laminate Timber Flooring [print this page]

Laminate timber flooring is a popular choice among those seeking the look of timber (without the cost of real timber) and wishing to avoid too much trouble in maintenance and cleaning.

Maintaining laminate timber flooring is easy and requires less effort. Laminate floors have non-porous surfaces that do not trap dust or dirt, making the process of cleaning it very easy.

Here are some tips to maintain laminate timber floors:

Sweep the floor with a broom (once or twice daily) to keep it clean. Water should be avoided (for cleaning purpose) as it gradually degrades the quality of the floor. So avoid using water until there are some stains which cannot be removed by dry sweeping.

When you are using water, ensure that you are using the minimum amount to clean the floor. Let a well wrung damp mop stand for 10 minutes. It will then have the maximum amount of moisture needed to clean the floor.

Before you use any cleanser dilute it. A very concentrated cleanser can damage the floor. Use oil based soap as oil has less affinity for water.

An interesting way to clean laminate floor is by using toothpaste. Toothpaste can remove the toughest of stains like sketch pen marks or crayon marks (made by children).

Vinegar works wonders with stains. White vinegar will remove greasy stains and also the smell that comes along with it.

Here are some things that can make stains that are difficult to remove. However, I have provided some unique ways to remove them:

Blood or cold drinks- The stains of blood or cold drinks cant be removed without using water. Apply hot water with soap solution over the stain. But you should not use scalding hot water as the polish can come off. Use as little water as possible. When the stain is removed, wipe away the excess moisture using a tissue.

Grease- Apply an ice pack over the grease until it hardens. Then scratch it off using a knife or a spoon (preferably a plastic one).

Heel marks- You will be surprised to know that you can erase heel marks using a pencil eraser. Rub a clean, good quality pencil eraser over the marks to remove it.

Liquor- Liquor can cause tough stains on laminate timber flooring. To clean them, damp a rug in soap water and gently rub on the stain. If this method fails, use a rug dampened with denatured alcohol and apply on the stain.
