subject: Why Use Virtual Private Servers [print this page]

Thousands of users today utilize internet hosting services to host their websites and make them available and accessible via the world wide web. There are a lot of web hosting platforms; each one is unique and offers its own unique benefits for its users. One of these platforms is the virtual private server, or VPS. Virtual private servers run software on a computer as others" virtual machines, but it functions as a completely separate computer. It does this because it is tied to the user"s needs and has the same privacy of a separate computer.

The idea behind a virtual private server follows the same principles found in time-sharing and multiprogramming. Clients often ask for server resources in an intermittent fashion. They"ll often demand speedy responses to their requests intermittently, but then go through long periods of inactivity in between. During these periods of inactivity, the computer"s resources can then be used to accommodate the requests of other clients. This makes the virtual private server model extremely efficient. It reduces idle time on the system and allows users to share the computer"s resources, even hard drives and printers.

The virtualization of the computer gives the user the illusion that there is more than one computer, more than one hard drive, and more than one printer. The resources are shared among users, like a time-share, but by using virtual private servers, the users are given more security since each individual virtual server is isolated from the other. A server that is virtual can run ts own operating system, or OS. Likewise, they can be independently rebooted, as well. This flexibility gives businesses the ability to run their applications on older operating systems on the same server that their newer applications can run on.

A growing number of businesses and companies offer virtual private servers to their clients as an extension of the web hosting services they may already provide. Often these servers are located in secured facilities that are protected numerous ways from disruption. This includes advanced security measures to dispel any virtual break ins, as well as environmental factors within the facilities, themselves, including temperature and air conditioning, fire suppression and power back ups should anything occur locally. Even flooring is a consideration, so you can rest easier knowing your information is safe.
