subject: Temple Of The Tooth A Sacred Site In Sri Lanka [print this page] Located in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the Temple of the Tooth relic, known as Sri Dalada Maligawa by locals is among the main religious sites in the country. Having long been a centre of Buddhist faith this charming 17th century temple is said to house Lord Buddha's left upper canine tooth. Hordes of pilgrims clad in white and bearing lotus blossoms visit the temple daily. The relic of Buddha's tooth has always played a significant role in local politics as well. The last capital of local kings, Kandy was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site partially due to this temple.
The temple's buildings which are white in colour have red roofs, clustering around the beautiful Kandy Lake. In stark contrast to the somewhat plain exterior, the temple's interior is richly carved and embellished with inlaid ivory, woods and lacquer. A low white stone wall encircles the entire complex, delicately carved with gaps which afford a filigree effect. These openings are where candles are placed during celebrations.
A two-story inner shrine preserves the relic of the tooth on a gold lotus flower. Two large elephant tusks are at the front of this shrine. The temple compound also consists of the king's palace.
The Esala Perahera, a world famous, 10 day torchlight parade featuring dignitaries, ornately decorated elephants, drummers and dancers, is associated with the temple and its tooth relic. It is the only time that the relic is removed from its shrine. One of the most renowned festivals in all of Asia, this prominent Buddhist celebration attracts tourists from all over the world. Begun in 18th century, this festival and ritual procession is led by a royal male elephant that carries the sacred tooth's reliquary, with two equally beautifully adorned smaller elephants on its either side.
