subject: Tips For Cleaning Area Rugs In The Home [print this page]

When you have ceramic tiles or wood tiles on your floor, they can be protected with area rugs. They can make a cool floor feel warm on your feet and are soft to step or lie on. They can be placed on an area that is heavily trafficked to keep the dirt off. However rugs can become dirty as well due to pets, children and weather conditions outside of the house. Such rugs can be cleaned manually once a month using manual cleaning or a carpet cleaner. When spots become visible, these should be removed immediately.

When cleaning rugs, you should first remove furniture or objects on them. Get someone else to help you remove the large and heavy pieces. The next step would be to roll up the rug beginning at one end. Lay this out on an area that is clean and less trafficked so that it would dry without acquiring new stains. Run a vacuum cleaner all over the rug so as to suck up pet hair and any loose debris.

The next step would be to manually clean it using a cleaning solution for rugs and carpet. You can buy this at the grocery, supermarket or department stores. Buy a rag and brush for this as well. Take all your cleaning supplies, which include hot water in a pan, to the area where you placed the rug.

Spray a couple of squirts of the cleaning solution beginning on the area rug's top. The entire area must be moistened evenly. To allow deep cleansing, rub in circular movements the cleaning solution on the rug using the soft bristle brush you have. Brush the whole area that was sprayed. Place the rag in hot water and wring out the excess water. Wipe the rug with the rag following a straight line. The rug will gather dirt and soap which should be squeezed away frequently. If you feel the rug is not yet thoroughly clean, repeat the whole procedure again. Place the rug under sunlight so that it would dry out and the smell would go away.

You can also rent or buy a carpet cleaner to clean your rug. When you rent it from a department store, you would pay around $20 daily. You will also need to buy a cleaning solution. If you buy this cleaner, the price will range from $50-$400. To use this, remove the soap holder and water from the cleaner by lifting them off. Place water inside until it reaches the water line and then put some soap. Return the holder to the cleaner where you will hear the holder snap into its proper place. Switch on the cleaner by pushing the button that says "on" and run it on the rug.

The carpet cleaner has a button or trigger releasing the soap and water solution. Hold the trigger of the cleaner and push it forward. Release the trigger and pull back the machine. As you push the machine forward, the trigger must be held so as to clean the rug. This must then be placed under the sun so that it would quickly dry.
