subject: What It Means To Be Accredited By The World Tefl Accrediting Commission [print this page]

Many people might be examining rigorous courses for training in a new career and wonder what it means to be accredited. It can be very important when going through training such as teaching English as a foreign language or TEFL to get your certifications through an accredited body. Just because you obtain a certificate from an accredited TEFL institution, the country where you end up teaching English may or may not accept your certification. This is why it can be important to look for accreditation by the World TEFL Accrediting Commission. The WTEFLAC is known throughout the worldwide TEFL and TESOL community. Some future students of TEFL may wonder: what does it mean to be accredited by WTEFLAC?

There is actually no one specific accrediting authority that governs how TEFL courses are run and whether or not certain courses meet the right standards. The World TEFL Accrediting Commission comes close, however. Although some organizations have you simply pay to add your name to their rosters, WTEFLAC goes through a rigorous evaluation process in which everything from your course advertisement to the course content and staff are examined.

One of the things that govern whether or not TEFL courses are granted accreditation by the World TEFL Accrediting Commission is whether or not they adhere to the WTEFLACs Code of Practice. The Code of Practice looks at every aspect of the TEFL courses from a given institution and makes sure that they meet certain standards before they can be accredited. It strives to make sure admissions are fair, that course information is clear and transparent, and that it provides quality instruction in order to produce quality results.

In order to gain accreditation, an institution must apply with the WTEFLAC and wait to be reviewed by a person from the Commission. The evaluator determines whether or not the courses meet the WTEFLAC Code of Practice and may grant accreditation if the courses appear to be of good quality and meets the standards set forth by the WTEFLAC. It can be important to note that while WTEFLAC may be well-known and even respected by much of the TEFL world, it is still possible that there may be areas that dont accept WTEFLAC accredited courses.

Being accredited by the World TEFL Accrediting Commission is not a small feat. It means that the TEFL courses have undergone evaluation in order to meet a strict Code of Practice and standards. WTEFLAC accreditation is often accepted all over the world where TEFL teachers are wanted. It seems that looking for a TEFL course of study through an institution accredited by the WTEFLAC will at the very least give you a quality learning experience.
