subject: Plastic Logic And Its Role In The German Tech Sector [print this page]

For the past 12 years they have been playing a leading role in the development of plastic electronics, a technology which offers a lot of exciting possibilities for the future.

Although, the headquarters of Plastic Logic is located in Cambridge, UK, the production and the manufacture of its flexible organic electronic displays takes place in Dresden, Germany. Plastic Logics factory in Dresden is the first factory to specialise in manufacturing plastic electronics on a commercial scale when itand was opened in 2008.

It is no surprise that this innovative company has chosen to locate their headquarters in Dresden, Germany. This region of Germany is one of the biggest hotspots in the world for the development and manufacture of plastic electronicsemiconductor technology; the Plastic Logic facility is working towards new and innovative developments in this field.

Silicon Saxony is Centre of Plastic Organic Electronics Development

The German federal state of Saxony, especially the region around Dresden, is the largest organic electronics area in Europe. This area is filled with a number of world renowned research and development institutes, as well as high tech universities which create the fertile and creative environment for an innovative start-up scene. It is home to the German Technical University as well asover ten other universities and several other semi-public institutes of applied high-technologies. This is what has earned the area the nickname Silicon Saxony after the famous Silicon Valley in the USA.

Dresden has been a major centre of microelectronics since even before the reunification of Germany. While mechanical engineering suffered in the south of eastern Germany in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the microelectronic industry was the first to recover with public help from the state. These successful industries soon were paving the way for other industries in the area.

The region has now become a technology centre and in many aspects it represents the last meaningful centre of microelectronics in Europe. Although many of the firms in the region are competing with the lower prices in Asia while being bound to the competition laws of the European Union, they are still managing to keep pace with the quickly evolving industry and strive towards innovative development.

Plastic Logic Leaders in the German Tech Sector

From their manufacturing facility in Dresden, Plastic Logic has been working hard to create many new innovations in the field of plastic electronics. Silicon Saxony is the perfect fertile environment in which to grow these ideas and work towards technological development. Plastic Logic is leading the way in developing plastic electronics which will be suitable for a wide range of applications.

They are working on manufacturing a flexible display backplane which can be used as a core element for an eBook reader and will be much cheaper than silicon. The process of coating and dry patterning that Plastic Logic uses to produce this product is three two years ahead of the competition, according to company spokesperson Rachel Lichten.

In addition to its prominent place on the landscape of Silicon Saxony, Plastic Logic is also part of the OES, which stands for Organic Electronics Saxony and is an important organisation within this region of Germany. OES channels interests and supporting members from projects and research into finished products within organic electronics and is also focused on the transfer for knowledge internally within research and development. Companies in Silicon Saxony are prioritizing networking among young graduates and entrepreneurs in the area in order to foster start-ups and encourage new and creative innovations in technology.

Silicon Saxony is a hotbed of ideas and innovations in the field of microelectronics and especially in the development of plastic electronics. This part of the world is alive with creative energy and collaboration and Plastic Logic is one of the major players within Silicon Saxony and the German tech sector.
