subject: Climbing Mount Batur In Bali Island [print this page]

Are you into mountain climbing but everyone else wants to see just the beautiful beaches and villas in Bali for rent? Fret not because this famed island of the gods is not just home to beaches, marine life, beach activities, posh restaurants and boutiques, as well as of villas Bali. More than that, Bali also has other adventure activities like climbing Mount Batur.

Mount Batur, or Gunung Batur, is an active volcano that rises 5,633 feet. What makes people want to climb this volcano is the stunning view it provides of Bali down below, as well as the amazing view of the sunrise and sunset from the top of Mount Batur.

Danau Batur, Balis largest crater-lake, fills the caldera.

How do you climb Mount Batur?

You can avail of this tour from any agency or have it arranged by your villas Bali staff. You will be picked up from Ubud at around 2 in the morning and you will begin your ascent to the volcano. As tour guides will be provided, most tours already include transportation, as well as breakfast. And if you want a buffet-style lunch, you can opt to have the pricier tour package. Tour rates range from $40 to $65. Take note that during the peak season, the climbers to the peak of Mount Batur may pile up.

If you are not taking a tour package from any of the agencies, then you can get just a tour guide from the Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides. The rate is set at $30. However, you may also trek the volcano without a guide. You just have to be firm about refusing guides when they approach you from the start of the trek up to the finish. Be careful when asking for directions as there are some of them who will give you misleading directions just to get back at you for refusing their services. To avoid this, you be sure to team up with other trekkers who do not want to hire guides.

The regular starting point of the tour to the summit of Mount Batur is Toya Bungkah. You would need about two hours to get to the top. But if you are looking for a more challenging path, you can start from Pura Jati which proves to be a more unpleasant trail as compared to Toya Bungkah. Your trail will include jagged lava fields to the top of the volcano.

Since Mount Batur is among Indonesias most active volcanoes, you have to make sure that its temperature is not too high which is indicative of a probable eruption. There was a group of tourists back in 2009 which trekked without a guide that got surprised by an eruption of Mount Batur. Dont let this happen to you.

So before you get out of your place or accommodation, which is one of the villas in Bali for rent, make sure that you are equipped with the right knowledge in order to avoid meeting accidents while climbing this active volcano called Mount Batur.
