subject: California Plaintiffs Sue Bayer Over Yaz-yasmin Side Effects [print this page]

In a latest medication lawsuit, three plaintiffs from Los Angeles, California have sued Bayer Pharmaceutical over the side effects caused by the birth control pill Yaz. The lawsuit was filed on the 25th of October, 2012, in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, California. In the lawsuit the 3 women plaintiffs claimed that after using the birth control pill they suffered many complications and side effects ranging from common cold to upper respiratory infections. Some of them have accused the drug for experiencing severe headaches, migraine, vaginal yeast infections and unusual vaginal discharge.

Though the lawsuit was filed in the county court it was later transferred to the multi district litigation court of the region that is overseeing many other Yaz-Yasmin lawsuits. All the three plaintiffs have framed charges of negligence, disproportionate information, concealment of relevant information and product liability to the manufacturer and sought for compensatory and punitive damages. There are plenty of other lawsuits against Bayer pending in theYaz-Yasmin MTDL Court that are yet to be heard.

The drug was approved by the FDA in the year of 2006 and Yasmin was released immediately. Initially, the manufacturer of the drug Bayer promoted and advertised the drug as a panacea for a multitude of women related problems like premenstrual dysphoric disorder and hormone induced acne. Since then many women have been using Yaz to regulate and improve their menstrual cycles. However, after using it they found that the everyday side effects of the drug created more problems than they thought.

The birth control pill Yaz is different from other contraceptive pills as it contains a new generation of synthetic progesterone called drospirenone which is closely related to spironolactone, a commonly known diuretic.

Asides the above mentioned side effects the drug readily interacts with other salts and chemicals leading to increase in the potassium levels of body. Some of the salts and chemicals that could easily interact with Drospirenone present in Yaz are:

Tranquilizers, barbiturates and other sleep inducing pills

Anastrozole

Antibotics like rifampin, rifabutin, griseofulvin, and rifapentine

Cyclosporine

Caffeine

Clofibrate

Some other side effects that the drug is linked to are pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. These are serious conditions as they may lead to heart attack or myocardial infarction. These side effects were reported by many victims while filing Yaz-Yasmin lawsuit. Various reports have determined that after taking Yaz and Yasmin birth control pill the rate of formation of blood clots in the limbs and thigh regions increases which needs immediate medical intervention.
