subject: Top 8 Fashion Staples For Tall Women [print this page]

We all have items of clothing that cycle through our closets with the seasons. Last year's favorite blouse fades, or is no longer in style, so it's quickly replaced with the latest trend. This "fashion cycling" is normal, but there are a few fashion staples that every tall woman should own. Make sure you invest wisely when you purchase your fashion staples, choosing well-made clothing and accessories that will wear with you for years.

1.The little black dress works for almost any occassion. Tall women should look for a dress that can be dressed up or down, shows off a few inches of skin above the knees, and looks modest when you wear it with a cardigan or blazer.

2.If you're like me, you own about 20 pairs of jeans. Half of them are too short, another few are too small, leaving you with only a pair or two to choose from when you're getting ready to go out.

Go ahead and let yourself invest in a pair or two of perfect jeans. Look for dark-wash jeans that skim the floor when you're wearing them with athletic shoes or short heels. You can expect them to shrink up slightly, so this extra length will ensure a perfect fit. Also, make sure you perform the squat test: squat down in the jeans to test whether the back waistband dips low, showing off a little too much in the back. You may need to purchase jeans with a mid-rise to prevent your panties from showing.

3. Every tall woman should have one go-to suit in her closet. Choose a neutral color and style that will last for years, like black, brown, navy or gray. Avoid shoulder-pads or outlandish patterns at all costs. Choose a simple cut with a jacket that hits at your hips and pants with a wider leg, preferably long enough for you to wear them with heels. Also, take the time to find a jacket that has sleeves that reach all the way to the first knuckle of your thumb. Twenty years from now when you pull out the suit for another job interview, you'll be grateful you took the time to follow these fashion rules.

4. If you don't open your closet every morning to see at least one pair of sexy, knee-high boots that can be worn with jeans, a suit or a skirt, it's time to invest. Choose a nice leather pair in black or brown with a moderate heel between one and two inches high. Avoid any extremes when it comes to round, pointed or square toes, going for something that will work well regardless of current trends. Just make sure that you absolutely love whatever boot you purchase - you're going to walk a lot of miles in those heels.

5. Until two years ago I had always shied away from bright coats because of two reasons:

I thought they drew too much attention

I felt they weren't practical - I couldn't see myself wearing the same bright coat over and over again

Then, on a whim, I tried on a beautiful, red wool, three-quarter-length coat from J.Crew. I felt transformed. The color, texture, richness and warmth enveloped me. I felt beautiful.

I bought the coat on the spot and I wear it all the time. It's my go-to confidence booster and I believe every tall woman needs one. Go ahead and purchase a coat that isn't practical. Buy one that is beautiful and luxurious and rich. You'll be surprised by how amazing you feel every time you put it on.

6. Let's get real here - when you're as tall as you are, people are going to notice you...all of you. You don't want your lady parts hanging low or bursting out in places they shouldn't be. Go ahead and get fitted for a couple new bras, and while you're at it, pick up some sexy matching panties. When you're tucked-in and lifted-up properly, you'll feel better about your whole outfit.

7. This is a practical item. I love big, heavy statement bags as much as the next woman, but every tall woman I have ever met suffers from regular back pain. Don't make it worse by carrying a big, heavy bag with you everywhere you go. If you have to take a big bag to work, keep a small back inside your big bag to carry your wallet, ID and keys. This way if you have to run errands during the day, just grab the small bag and give your back a break.

8. Go ahead and buy one pair of the highest, brightest, most outlandish high heels that you can find. Just make sure it's a pair that you love. Throw them on for a "tall girls' night out" or when you want to make people look at you twice. You probably won't get a whole lot of use out of them, but if they make you smile when you think of your high-heel escapades, then they've done their job.
