subject: Ways Of Treating Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis Naturally [print this page]

There is a big difference between having a one off episode of BV and having the condition repeatedly. Sadly, many women take endless rounds of antibiotics and often find that rather than eradicating the condition, the attacks become more and more severe. If this is the case, treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis naturally is really the only way forward.

If you have recurrent episodes, then this is a sign that you have an imbalance in your body which is never really going away. Antibiotics and over the counter creams will help deal with the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis but the problem is that they do not, and cannot treat the root cause. There can be many reasons why a women will get BV and the only surefire way to cure it permanently is to remove whatever is causing it, making the body a "BV free zone" - in other words, the body becomes hostile to bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis is the result of an overgrowth of harmful bacteria within the vagina. Under normal circumstances, the pH level within the vagina is mildly acidic and this supports the growth of healthy Lactobacillus bacteria. If alkaline conditions occur, harmful bacteria known as Gardnerella will flourish and this causes the symptoms of BV, which include itching and burning, together with a foul-smelling fishy vaginal discharge. The causes can be multifaceted, but can include a change in sexual partner, overwashing, douching or even just being "under the weather".

Treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis naturally is not difficult and revolves around using strategies to strengthen and support the good bacteria within the vagina and this, in turn, will eliminate the condition.

To get started, try using tea tree oil. This very powerful, natural antibacterial substance is one of the most potent known to man and yet, is gentle enough to be used around the delicate vagina. You can either add 10-12 drops to a shallow or Sitz bath or alternatively use ready made tea tree oil pessaries which are available from health food stores.

Another excellent way for treating recurrent bacterial vaginosis naturally is by using probiotics. Probiotics are rich in live bacteria, of the sort which is needed to maintain the healthy balance within the vagina. Although some will advocate eating live, natural probiotic yogurt, one of the best ways to use it is to soak a tampon in the yogurt and insert it directly into the vagina for a couple of hours and it will begin working immediately.

Prompt action is always a good idea if you have BV as although not dangerous in the early stages, if left untreated bacterial vaginosis can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and even infertility. This is particularly important for women with recurrent BV as each attack can potentially lead to further damage.
