subject: Promoting Patterns That Foster The Shedding Of Weight [print this page]

Losing weight can be challenging for many people, and very often what really makes a difference are the habits you practice every day without even thinking about it. This doesn't only mean starting an exercise program or dieting, though these practices can certainly be helpful. Your overall results depend on things like your snacking habits, the size or your portions and how active you are all day long.

You can get a lot more out of exercise if you "sneak" it in throughout the day rather than just do it at set times a few times per week.

If we move around more at home, work and in between normal activities, we're not relying completely on our regular workouts, which too often aren't that consistent. This can mean walking up stairs instead of taking an elevator or escalator, or perhaps walking or riding a bike to the store instead of driving. You can take five or ten minute exercise breaks at work, which can be walking or doing some calisthenics. You can even sneak in some extra exercise at home while watching TV or during breaks from being online.

Consider the psychological principle that it's better to focus on adding good things to your diet rather than giving up bad things. It's much better to place as much of your attention as possible on what it's beneficial for you to eat instead of those things you're trying to give up. Try to get into the habit of making a priority out of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables; when you eat more of these, you'll automatically be eating fewer unhealthy foods as there won't be as much space in your body or your budget for them!

When you go shopping, start off by buying foods that you know are good for you, and make these the focus of your meals. So instead of going over in your mind what you're trying to give up, remind yourself of how good you'll feel when you eat more healthy foods.

Make sure you're not eating out of habit rather than because you really need to. There's no point in eating unless your body has an actual need for nourishment -that should be your guide, not the clock. You should also not take extra helpings of a dish simply because it's available. You may not realize this, but eating quickly actually tends to make you eat more, so by chewing slower you can consume less. You'll find that you actually get filled up by less food when you chew more slowly. There's a certain time lag between the time you chew your food until it digests, so eating too fast doesn't give you time to get the signal that you're full. Eating more consciously, by only eating when you're really hungry and by eating at a slower pace, can help you to lose weight.

By honestly looking at your own habits, you can assess what areas of your life need changing if you want to lose weight more easily. Exercise, for instance, is much more effective if you do it regularly, at least a few times per week. Dieting on and off is not very helpful, but healthy eating habits will make a real difference over time. You need to be persistent in your efforts to develop healthier habits, as the old ones will always try to tempt you.
