Getting a seat in trains is becoming harder nowadays with a lot of people opting for a train journey. There is a provision to book tickets as early as 120 days prior to the date of departure of the train. So you must book tickets well in advance to get a confirmed ticket. When you book a train ticket you must have noticed a 10-digit number on the top left-hand corner of your ticket. This number is the PNR number. PNR stands for the Passenger Record Number. It is a unique number which has to be quoted when you make IRCTC PNR enquiry.

When you book a train ticket, you have to fill out a reservation form in which all details like names of passengers, their age, starting station, ending station, date and time of travel, mobile number, address, etc., are to be given. Based on all these details the PNR number is issued, which can be used to identify every ticket reservation uniquely. It is a very important tool when it comes to checking updates of your ticket and confirming your reservation.

The PNR status can be checked in a number of ways. The easiest method is to check it online on the website of IRCTC. When you log on to the site, you can see a link to check the PNR status. If you click on that you will be redirected to another page where you will be asked to enter the 10-digit PNR number. Once you type the number on the space provided, all details of ticket like passengers list, starting and ending stations, date and time of travel, current status and status at the time of booking are displayed. If your ticket is confirmed, the coach number and seat number will also be shown.

Checking the PNR status through your mobile phone is another method offered by the railway. IRCTC mobile is an application that can be installed on your cell phone handset, and you can have easy access to all services of IRCTC. The phone should be Java enabled or a smart phone, and it should also be GPRS enabled. Once you download the application, you have to register with the IRCTC. You can then log into the application using your user ID and password. The PNR status of your ticket can be easily checked by typing in the PNR number in the required field. The SMS facility is also available to check your PNR status.

If you are staying near the railway station, you can check the status of your ticket there. There are also call centers where you can call on toll-free numbers and make IRCTC PNR enquiry. It is very important to check the PNR status when your ticket is in RAC or Waitlist.
