subject: Reasons Not To Pursue A Career In Plastic Surgery [print this page]

Every year, college students decide to enter into the field of plastic surgery. So, they meet with their advisors to make sure they are taking all of the right courses. They study throughout the night to ensure that they pass all of their tests. They even form study groups. Then, there are those who take things a step further and study other books on top of the texts they are required to study. Some would say that this type of work ethic is all that is needed for someone to get into the field of plastic surgery. Although being a hard worker who loves learning is a big part of being successful in this field, there is one thing that many of these students overlook. That is the reasoning behind their pursuit of this particular career.

If you are thinking about getting into this field, you may want to think long and hard about your motives, before you seriously begin your pursuit. There are several reasons why you probably shouldn't pursue this particular career path.

First of all, you shouldn't go into plastic surgery if you are only doing it for the money. If you are, you either won't last very long or you will be miserable. Just because you won't be performing heart procedures doesn't mean that you will have it easy. Every surgical procedure comes with some sort of risk. Therefore, your job will be somewhat stressful. Of course, it won't be that way at all times. However, there will be times when you'll want to pull your hair out. For the most part, no amount of money will help to alleviate this type of stress.

Therefore, you should go into the field with a genuine interest in helping people. Some don't realize it, but there are some cosmetic procedures that have totally transformed people's lives for the better. Their self-esteem level is increased and their sense of self worth is restored. Knowing that you can make that type of difference in someone's life will help get you through those times when you feel overwhelmed and you're ready to give up.

Another reason that you shouldn't pursue a career in this field is if you don't like learning. Once you have finished your schooling and training, you will still need to increase your knowledge. That's because technology is always changing and science is always advancing. So, you may do something one way today, and two years down the road it may be totally different.

Wanting to pursue a career in plastic surgery is a great choice. However, you must make sure you aren't doing it for the wrong reasons. If you do, you will only be making it harder on yourself.
