A nightclub is also called a discotheque, a club or disco to some other terms. One should not mistakea discotheque from a bar, pubs or tavern as they are completely different from each other. A discotheque includes a DJ booth where a DJ plays music such as electronic dance music, disco, hip hop, R&B, pop music and disco music. A bar, a pub or a tavern doesnt have a dance floorthe same as nightclubs.

Not only that, many night clubs also play the top 40 during the night. Night clubs unlike pubs operates during late hours only. Aside from that, they also have their own rules and regulations in terms of entry criteria, dress code, guest list and music genres as not all night clubs have the same music genres since other night clubs consider some particular genres of music to be played during the night.

As for the entry criteria, many night clubs are kind of exclusive. They choose who can enter other than just age or dress code. There are no certain policies regarding nightclub entry so therefore, the doormen are allowed to deny entry at their discretion.

In most cases, when you enter a night club, they will require you to pay a flat fee called a cover charge (entrance fee). Cover charges are applied for several reasons. When there is a substantial excess demand to a particular club especially to those that are popular clubs, the club can then gain extraincome by charging patrons an entrance fee. Not all clubs use cover charges though. Some clubs only requires a flat fee from customers when there is a live entertainment or a DJ. However, firneds of the club owner or the doorman may gain free entrance fee. As for early arrivers and women, their cover charged could be reduced.

The history of nightclubs started since 1900 where working class Americans would get together at juke joints or honky tonks to dance to music played by a jukebox or a piano until 1920. Nightclubs went underground as illegal during US Prohibition. In February 1933, nightclub operations were revived when the Repeal of Prohibition was approved. During these years, DJs were not popular at nightclubs but instead, they feature live bands.

As time goes by, music genres that were used in nightclubs changed and also the appearance of the clubs has changed overtime from piano and jukebox to DJ and techno music.
