subject: How Typists Can Avoid Carpal Tunnel [print this page]

The best way to avoid or treat any medical or physical issue is to see a specialist. This includes everything from back pain to carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel, in particular, is an issue that many typists deal with every once in a while. As previously stated, consulting with a professional is their best bet. However, there are a few things they can do to help decrease the chances of the issue reemerging, once they have left the doctor's office.

One of the things typists can do to prevent carpal tunnel is to conduct hand exercises. There are many online videos, websites and even some books that are dedicated to teaching people hand exercises. For the most part, the exercises are pretty simple and easy to catch on to. A person doesn't have to spend a whole lot of time on the exercise. Just 5 to 10 minutes a day can make a big difference. Taking just a minute between typing tasks to go through a few hand movements is another great idea.

Another way that typists can avoid carpal tunnel syndrome is by making sure they are sitting properly when they are typing. Many people get bored with sitting at a table or a desk while they are typing. So, they opt to sit on the sofa or on their beds. Others feel as if it is too uncomfortable to sit properly at a desk for hours on end. Therefore, they end up slouching and relaxing their hands a little too much. All of these things can cause significant hand issues in the long run.

Lastly, typists can avoid this hand and wrist issue by checking in with a specialist on a regular basis. It could be once a month or once every couple of months. It all depends on the person's preferences. The specialist would be able to monitor, diagnose, treat or even prevent any issues that may arise, before they escalate into something worse.

Visiting a specialist on a regular basis may not be a feasible idea for people who don't use their hands and wrists as often as typists do. However, for those who use this part of the body a lot, periodically checking in with a specialist can only help.

Some people try to shy away from things like typing, because they believe it will automatically cause carpal tunnel. This is simply not true. Although some people experience this issue, there are several ways to avoid and prevent it. All a person has to do is take all of the necessary precautions.
