subject: Exploring Lake Geneva In Switzerland [print this page]

Are you planning your transfer from Geneva to Val Thorens to enjoy a skiing holiday? If so, dont be too hasty when you arrive at the airport in Switzerland. You may want to get to the ski resort as soon as possible, but take the time to stick around and explore the attractions of Lake Geneva and you wont regret it.

Quick Overview

This is a truly vast lake. Part of it is located in France and part of it is in Switzerland, and it has a surface area of over 200 square miles. When you are booking your transfer from Geneva to Val Thorens, you will have the perfect opportunity to stop off for a few hours [or longer] to explore the most interesting sections of the lake near the city. However, there are lots of other interesting places to visit that encompass the lake region, including Lausanne and Villeneuve, amongst others.

Seeing the Best of the Lake

You may want to go for a walk along the edge of the lake when you arrive in the city and, of course, this is a great way to see it. There are some excellent attractions along the edge of the water, with one of the best being the Jet dEau. This huge jet of water is one of the highest in the world, and one of the top attractions of the city. You literally cannot miss it so you wont have any trouble finding your way there!

However, perhaps an even better way to get the most out of the lake is to head out on a boat trip. Cruises can easily be arranged and you will be able to get a very different view of the city and all of its attractions from a vantage out in the lake; this comes highly recommended. One of the sights to look out on your cruise is St Pierre Cathedral, which you should also make the time to visit by foot for closer inspection.

Events on the Lake

If you happen to be arranging your transfer from Geneva to Val Thorens at the right time of year, you may be lucky enough to enjoy one of the events that takes place on the lake. One of the most interesting of these is Coupe de Nol, which is held in December. Hundreds of people line up to jump into the lake for a swim, braving the freezing cold water apparently for fun! Another fun event to look out for is the Lake Sailing Regatta, which is held in June. Hundreds of boats compete for line honours, making for an incredible sight.

Dont miss out on discovering more about this beautiful lake before being whisked off on your ski transfer from Geneva to Val Thorens. There is so much to see here and you will not regret spending a day in the city before you head off to snowy pastures.
