subject: Area Equals Length Times Width [print this page]

Introduction to area equals length times width:

Area equals length times width is the way of defining rectangle.

A rectangle is a quadrilateral, in which every angle is right angle .

In rectangle opposite sides are parallel and equal in length .

Rectangle is the only polygon with this special property of area equal to length times the width .

The statement area equal to length times the width makes us easiest way to find the area of the rectangle .

Properties of a rectangle:

1)Opposite sides are parallel and congruent.

2) the diagonals bisect each other

3) the diagonals are congruent

Other properties of rectangle:

1) A square is a special case of a rectangle where all 4 sides are of same length.

2) Rectangle is also a special case of parallelogram, but all the angles are fixed at 900 .

Area Equals Length Times Width:

AREA OF RECTANGLE

Area of a rectangle can be defined as " area equals the length times the width "

i,e AREA = LENGTH * WIDTH

PERIMETER OF A RECTANGLE

Perimeter of a rectangle can be defined as two times length and width

Perimeter = 2length + 2 width = 2 ( length + width )

Problems on the Area Equal Length Times Width:

Pro 1 : Given that in the rectangle , length of a side is 9cm and the width is 4cm . Find the area of the rectangle .

Sol : given , length = 9cm

width = 4cm

we know that , Area = length * width

thus according to the formula , area = 9*4

= 36 square cm

Pro 2 :Find the length of the side of the rectangle whose area is 50sq.cm abd whose width is 50cm ?

Sol : Given , width = 10cm

area = 50sq.cm

we know that , area = length * width

by inter-changing the above formula as shown below we can find the length when area and width is given ,

length = area/ width

so , length = 50/10

= 5cm

Understand help with college math is always challenging for me but thanks to all math websites to help me out.

Pro 3:Find the area of the rectangle given that length is 5cm and the width is 6cm ?

Sol : given , length =5cm

width = 6cm

area of rectangle = length * width

= 5 * 6

= 30 sq.cm

Practice Problems on area :

Pro 1: Find out the area of a rectangle whose length is 23.4 and width is 20cm.

Ans: Area of rectangle = 468 cm2

Pro 2: Find out the area of a rectangle whose base is 35and height is 8cm.

Ans: Area of rectangle = 280 cm2

Pro 3: Find out the area of a rectangle whose length is 45 and width is 14cm.

Ans: Area of rectangle = 630 cm2
