subject: Caring For Your Leather Satchel [print this page] Leather bags are a sign of sophisticationLeather bags are a sign of sophistication. They complete a wardrobe in all respects. Various types of leather bags are used by both men and women. These are long lasting unless they are taken good care of. It is very important to clean and condition them so that they are able to maintain their quality. Not only cleaning and polishing, but leather bags also require a proper handling. So here are a few tips about how to care for and handle leather bags.
Cleaning your leather bag to remove liquid, grease and glue stains
Due to the enormous space it provides, a leather satchel bag is used by many people to put things like food items, liquid cosmetics, water bottles and other such reactive substances that can spill over and make it dirty. These chemicals and even pure water if dropped on a leather bags surface and not wiped off immediately can damage it making permanent marks. The best way to avoid these instances is to keep a soft cotton cloth always handy so that as soon as any such substance spills over the bag, it is cleaned there and then. If you have warm water available at that time, it is even better. Just damp the cloth with warm water and then clean the surface of the bag. With warm water, stubborn stains of gel and other thick liquids also come off with little scrubbing force applied.
One thing here, that should be taken care of is that make sure the cloth is not excessively wet. You do not need to submerge the cloth into water but just sprinkle a few drops of water over it. If the cloth is excessively wet then it will rather leave some stains on the bags surface than cleaning it. But this type of cleaning will not work for all types of stains like those of grease and glue. For such stains, you would require talcum powder or cornstarch which is to be sprinkled over the stained surface and left for a few hours to let it dry. After a few hours, use a soft dry cloth to wipe off the dirty spot.
Stains of glue hold the surface even more strongly. But these can also be cleaned very easily by applying ice cubes to them. Rub a few ice cubes over the surface of the bag which has glue stuck to it so that it becomes stiff. After it hardens completely, try to pull off the entire layer in one go. This has to be done very carefully so that the leather itself does not come off with it.
Handle your leather satchel properly
If you are carrying your leather satchel bag daily to work, make sure that you keep it at a dry place with a normal room temperature. Keeping it in a cool place may result in cracks appearing over it. Also keeping it in places prone to accidents like the kitchen shelf will also result in damage. Also try to keep it away from moist places.
