subject: Mattresses - How To Make Your Bed Last Longer [print this page]

Even though your new bed has come with a very impressive manufacturer's warranty, there are ways you can extend its life even more. Mattresses that are properly cared for can last seven to ten years. If you take a few precautions and utilize a few steps, your bed will provide you with many years of comfort.

No matter what kind of mattresses you have in your home, you need to make sure that they are situated where there is plenty of room for them to breathe. When you sleep, moisture from your body, the air, and even the condensation from your breath can become trapped within the fabric. This can cause the development of mold and mildew. In order to prevent your beds from holding and absorbing moisture, you should make sure that the room is properly ventilated and that your covers and blankets are rolled down to the foot of the bed each morning for at least an hour.

Even though you may have plenty of room to spare, whenever you decide to relax in your bed you should not make it a habit to use it for a table. As easy as it is for you to sit books, toys, computers, food, and drinks on your mattresses, it is even easier for spills and stains to occur. If you don't want to end up with mattresses that are not very attractive and don't want to attract some unwanted guests, keep the food and drinks away from your sleeping area.

One of the most common reasons that beds have to be replaced is that they stop properly supporting your body. Some of the less obvious signs of beds that need to be replaced are when you wake up sore and aching from lying in them. More obvious signs are when you notice that your beds are sagging and bending under your weight. When you decide replacement is necessary, you should make it a priority to replace the springs and frames too. They will not be able to properly support your new beds and can shorten the lifespan of them considerably. Make sure that any box springs and frames you get are made specifically for the size of the mattress you are getting.

Invest in decorative sheets and covers that will keep everything covered. Not only will this improve the appearance of your rooms, it will also help to keep spills, stains, and dust off of the fabric. You can even invest in pads to give you more cushion and covers to help provide you with an extra layer of protection.
