subject: Top 5 Car Manufacturing Countries [print this page] Car manufacturing has been the cornerstone of many countries industrial sectors for decades. While many people automatically think of the auto industry in Michigan is the United States and in Southwestern Ontario in Canada, there are many cars that are built around the world. And, the truth that there are more cars produced outside of North America today than ever before.
This is perhaps why there are so many advocates promoting and encouraging consumers to buy locally manufactured vehicles from companies Like Ford and General Motors.
So, who are the top car manufacturing countries in the world? The results may surprise you a little. The United States is no longer number one on the list. The following list is based solely on the number of vehicles produced.
China: Just like with many other manufacturing based industries, China has taken over as the world leader. This can be attributed to lower wage and production costs. With more than 18 million vehicles produced last year, China build more than two times the number of vehicles than the second leading care producer.
The United States of America: Producing nearly 9 million vehicles in 2011, which is down almost million units when compared to previous decades, the United States is firmly entrenched as the number two car manufacturing country in the world.
Japan: Japan has been a major player in the auto industry for years and this is why we have seen and influx of Japanese built cars in North America. With more than 8 million cars produced last year, which is down from previous decades, Japan is a staple in the top three.
Germany: Another well known, car manufacturing country, German produced cars at record numbers in 2011, with more than 6 million cars built.
South Korea: South Korea rounds out the top 5 with the production of a little more than four and a half million car built.
What does this say about the car manufacturing industry?
It is clear from this list that North America no longer has a stronghold on the car manufacturing industry. With three Asian countries in the top five, and with China dominating production, it is clear that the worldwide car manufacturing industry has shifted to the east. Even though the United States auto industry has recovered well of the economic downturn, they are still nowhere near unseating China
Where is Canada?
Surprisingly, Canada does not even crack the top 10. So, where do they rank? Canada ranks 11th in the world rankings for car production; they produced just over two million cars last year.Even though they are ranked out of the top ten, Canada is not far behind other countries that are ahead of them in the rankings. Countries that produce more care than Canada include India, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and France.
It is clear that the location where cars are manufactured in the world has shifted over the past few decades. However, even though the country has changed, vehicle production is at an all-time high.
