subject: Thanksgiving In A Michigan Nursing Home [print this page]

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is centered on family and thankfulness. One of the chief fears of elderly adults when the move into a Michigan nursing home is that they will be forgotten or at least wont see their family as much as they used to. On this important and traditional holiday, being with family is very important. This is where understanding what Michigan nursing homes offer as far as holiday accommodations comes into play and making time to be with your elderly loved one.

Traditions

Holidays are riddled with traditions and Thanksgiving is no different. To many elderly adults, Thanksgiving has become a favorite. There should be no difference between the families presence in their loved ones life based on a move, but it cannot always be helped. The least many families can do is make sure that the elderly loved one is included in times like. Tradition are a big part of all of this, like what you eat, how it is prepared, or even activities the family does during the day. These are all important. The best way to keep your loved one in the loop is to involve them in all of the activities, but sometimes they cannot leave their Michigan nursing home. At that point you should just bring what you can to them, they will be grateful for anything.

Michigan Nursing Home Celebrations

Many Michigan nursing homes offer the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and stuffing. These are foods that many residents will recognize from their pasts and help them acclimate to the new environment. The dinner does include some special items like pumpkin pie sometimes.

Something that many Michigan nursing homes offer is festive decorations. This is an inexpensive way to add a little spirit into the holiday and for the most part has a great effect on residents. Even a few decorations like pumpkins, turkeys, fall leaves and cornucopias can be enough.

There are usually some kind of festive activities that take place around the holidays to promote holiday spirit. These things are all great ways to make residents feel better, but nothing compares to a family involving the individual.

Michigan nursing homes do what they can to make residents feel more accepted and at home, but the real benefits come from the family. It can be a tasking thing as a family to do what is needed to keep a loved one involved, but it is worth the effort. As a family make plans, traditions, and commitments with your loved one and do what you can to uphold them, because they are more important than many of us realize.
