subject: What Are The Important Features To Look For In A Business Laptop? [print this page]

Businesses are finding themselves having to become increasingly mobile and flexible in order to stay ahead in their competitive market. Advances in technology are in part to blame for this as we now expect an almost instantaneous response via our rapid communications networks like telephone, email, instant messenger and more. Interestingly, while technology has made our lives easier in so many ways it has also created more work as we are expected to achieve more with our time!

If the nature of your business requires you to travel frequently then you will almost certainly need to purchase a suitable laptop for keeping on top of things whilst away from your desk. For a small business investing in a piece of equipment like a new desktop or laptop computer can be very significant so it is important that you spend some time researching your options carefully before reaching a decision.

Think about how you intend to use the laptop or computer. If you are likely to be using complex data analysis or heavily graphics-based software then you will need a computer with a good graphics card, high quality screen and enough RAM to run several applications at once. 4GB of RAM should be sufficient for most businesses and a Quad core processor will enable you to make the most of running your specialist software.

If the main purpose of your laptop purchase is to keep on top of emails, orders and social media whilst away from your desk then a dual core processor like the Intel or AMD should be sufficient. Instead you may want to focus on internet access and choose a laptop with built-in 3G or even 4G receivers so you can always remain connected. Alternatively, for a more cost-effective option you can always purchase a dongle receiver that simply plugs into one of your USB ports. Remember to check your 3G tariff carefully as well as your download limit to avoid mounting up a sizable bill.

Many modern laptops no longer come with an optical drive as so much data is exchanged digitally today. However, in a business it may be useful to have an optical drive readily available so that you can still burn data to disc for clients or load a disc that has been sent to you easily. If you are likely to take your laptop on the road a lot then you may also want to think about purchasing a solid state external hard drive for data storage or even a laptop with a solid state hard drive.
