subject: How To Become A Skilled Essay Writer [print this page]

The aim of a writer should be to strive for precision, not perfection.

One frequently comes across that is so impressive that rather than feeling inspires, one feels intimidated. This is further spurred by an onset of dread of writing an essay. This tendency to undermine one"s own skills hampers the growth of many a researcher, who assume that they are not "cut out" for the academia. Before quitting, they should have questioned some of the high ranking professors at their institutes whether they experienced something similar and if so, what were the ways they overcame the fear.

The answers received may not always be very specific or direct, because there are multiple factors that influence essay writing. What one should understand and accept it is that it is a highly individualized skill that is learned.

Most of all, because writing is a direct product of the thought process, it is the way of thinking that one needs to manipulate before beginning to write. Even those with a natural flair require training and discipline.

An essay"s context depends on its genre, mainly narrative, expository, persuasive or descriptive. Observe the following example of an essay question:

State the social issues faced by urban dwellers in the developing countries.

The first step is to identify the keywords. In the example, these would be "social," "urban" and "developing countries". The general rule is to move the flow of essay writing from broad to specific. One can start by providing background information.

This may also be included in an abstract where required. In the aforementioned example, this would mean discussing urbanism in general and explaining how urbanization has influenced the social set up in developing countries.

The direction may then be dependent up on what topic sentences are written that will demonstrate the seriousness of the situation. For instance, one can draw a comparison between the past and present social conditions of a few selected countries.

Next would be to identify what these issues are. This means listing them as points and then elaborating each one. Also, citing examples adds weight to the content without which, statements would seem more a personal viewpoints.

It is best to write a summary of ideas one on the side as the writing progresses. This ensures that important points have all been covered to the end of the essay. The best of essays are rejected on grounds of failing to answer the question asked. At the university level, answers are not expected to be direct. At this stage, one should understand the expectation is not only a learning exercise for the student, but a contribution to academia. As such, one must maintain high standards in practice. This includes accuracy in research as well as content.

One of the factors rarely mentioned and one that impacts an essay"s delivery is the lack of research conducted. Research involves not just exploring the subject for content, but on guidance tools that help one improve both their research and writing. This is one area that always has room for improvement and not just reading about it, but putting it into practice.

Once all the golden rules are applied, one becomes more confident and feel satisfaction that comes from hard labor, which is what good writing involves.
