subject: Aged Woods Sustainable Flooring Preserves The Patina Of Age And Weather [print this page]

As part of the movement to reduce harvesting of natural resources and reuse more of what we already have, consumers are looking for greener ways to decorate their homes.

Reclaimed wood flooring is just one of the features eco-concious home and business owners use in their work and living spaces. At Aged Woods, we proudly provide the tools and materials necessary to give our customers the finest and most sustainable flooring available.

The majority of wood we use is salvaged from aging and abandoned buildings that show their years in characteristic weathering. Because our products are considered repurposed, they are certified Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recycled wood. Our clients appreciate knowing they aren't contributing to modern deforestation or purchasing a product made from low grade materials.

The thing that people love about antique wood flooring is the visible evidence of its history. Rather than displaying a look identical to every other plank on the floor, the pieces from Aged Woods each tell their own story, and reveal the talent of craftspeople through the ages. Our team is careful to do just enough planing to produce a floor on which it's safe to walk, while retaining as much of the effects from time and the elements as possible.

Our recycled wood flooring is often from lumber that was originally milled 75 to 100 years ago, and occasionally as much as 200 years ago. While the living trees grew during a period of unique ecological balance, and reflect it in the tight grain and durability of their planks, the decades and centuries spent as buildings caused the wood to experience changes in color. This aging process moves down into the wood from the surface, and gives the pieces a permanent patina. It's vitally important that our planing and remilling processes be done judiciously to preserve this patina while also producing reclaimed wood flooring that is highly usable.

Aged Woods has been selling sustainable flooring since the mid 1980s, and is glad to see the concepts of green building gaining popularity in the 21st century. We enjoy working with environmentally conscious clients and professionals who appreciate not only the beauty of our products, but the statement they make about responsible consumerism. It's also fun to discuss the architectural and geographical history of our antique wood flooring.

Beyond flooring, Aged Woods produces FSC recycled wood in the form of parts for staircases. If you're thinking of redoing or adding steps in your home or business, talk to our experts about incorporating Aged Woods. We can also furnish floor vents and grills.

The trees Aged Woods products come from grew primarily in the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. Some of the species you will see in our recycled wood flooring are oak, white pine, yellow pine, maple, hickory, American chestnut and heartpine.

At Aged Woods, we understand the delicate balance that is reclaimed wood flooring. Our clients want the look and eco-concious nature of wood that was harvested, milled and used in decades and centuries past. They also require flooring that is safe and functional, and void of splinters and warped planks. If this sounds like you, give us a call today!
