subject: Maximizing Small Spaces [print this page]

We"ve been seeing a lot of articles about people having smaller houses or spaces but have managed to style them magnificently and resourcefully according to their needs. With the current economic situation and for cities or countries where land/space is a valuable and a very expensive commodity, it is indeed a wise step for a lot of homebuyers or apartment seekers to opt for smaller spaces and work on what they have to create not just a structure to live in but a stylish home. I would say that choosing a small space is definitely one of the current trends in homes.

When it comes to home staging a limited space, the job can be very challenging and since we are just working on a small area, we don"t want any clutter or too much stuff that would eat up our precious space, right? In this situation, we really have to choose and arrange our furnishings sensibly "" they should be functional and proportionate to the size of the home. We also need to work on making the area appear more spacious. So here are some ideas that are economic and space efficient:

Do you have a space under your staircase? Make it into a cupboard/ cabinet or put shelves to put stuff into; for every space between the steps, use that as a bookshelf or even a shoe rack (you wouldn"t want your shoes on a small entry way).

Imagine a bunk bed/double deck bed, but instead of a bed below, you may customize it and make it your workspace complete with a desk and shelves while the top part is your snooze area.

Pick furniture that has a double purpose "" like an ottoman, bench or coffee table that can also be a storage piece.

Use a futon bed or a sofa bed "" somewhere to sit in the morning and a place to sleep at night.

Choose the right paint and lighting. The right color of paint and good lighting will make a big difference on how your space appears.

These are just some tips on how to use your space prudently. Having a small space may not be for everyone but in reality, there are definitely people out there who find it very convenient to have smaller homes or rent smaller apartments. It"s not an easy task to create functional spaces but there are really lots of things you can do to maximize a small space. It just takes a little planning and creativity and you"ll sure come up with a space that works for you!
