subject: Underwater Photography Of Henrik Welle At Agora Gallery [print this page]

Henrik Welle gives his viewers an insight into the inner spirit and character of the colorful sea anemones, slugs, and other creatures captured in his work. In the process, he takes his photography beyond purely naturalist studies of the underwater world. Finding inspiration and abstraction in the details, Welles vibrant compositions transform the subject into visual explorations in color and form. The artist also explores the figure and aspects of narrative in surrealistic vignettes, and these, too use water in their composition. The works become studies in the absurd, where a submerged man casually reads and types on a keyboard while fully clad in dark glasses, pants and a button down shirt. Welles images in black and white and vivid color are printed as limited edition photographic prints on aluminum.

Born in Germany, Welle initially studied marketing and political economics before discovering his true calling in the ocean. He now lives in Miami, Florida where in addition to becoming an accomplished and passionate scuba diver he has developed an impressive career in underwater photography, appearing in both regional and international publications and exhibitions.
