subject: Colourful Cloakrooms And Beautiful Bathrooms: A Beginners Guide [print this page]

The overwhelming majority of modern bathroom suites now come in a simple plain white finish. The recent fashion in modern bathroom dcor has also been for plain white walls. While these two options are both great for creating a bathroom that feels clean and fresh, and can help to increase the sensation of light and space in our bathroom, they can also leave the room feeling a little cold and sterile. That being the case, here a few ideas for how to inject a little colour and character back into your bathroom.

White walls are still a great foundation when reassessing the look of your bathroom, and should not be discounted immediately. Patterned accents and borders can make a room feel busy and cramped, so a simple statement wall can be an elegant touch. Try painting one wall of your bathroom a light pastel shade and then coordinating a few bathrooms accessories, such as towels, curtains or blinds and possibly one or two ornaments in the same colour. This is a subtle change that will lend a little more warmth and make the room feel more thought out and designed than before.

Using tiles in specific areas of the bathroom is another option that is pretty enjoying real popularity amongst designers. A splash protection area behind your basin is a great place to start. Mosaic tiles will be an interesting feature, yet controlled in a small space, so that they function as a design feature, rather than a dominant decorative theme. Natural stone tiles are also undergoing resurgence in demand, as they communicate a character and warmth that has been lacking from many modern bathrooms in recent years.

Bathroom furniture is also coming back in a big way. Right on trend this year are fitted bathroom cabinets in natural wood finishes. Bathroom furniture suppliers are creating new ranges all the time so the choice of wood is entirely up to you. Lighter woods, such as oak, will help to forge a consistency of design throughout your bathroom, keeping the space light and serene. Dark woods, however, such as walnut or wenge, are a much bolder and more dramatic choice. The stark contrast between the lightness of your walls and bathroom suite, and the rich earthy quality of the darker woods will certainly create a talking point!

Bathroom furniture will not only help to coordinate and tie together the design of your bathroom, but will provide ample storage space to allow you to keep your bathroom calm and uncluttered. This is a subtle change, but can make a huge difference. Similarly, ensuring that any grouting and waterproof sealant are freshly installed or scrubbed clean will guarantee that there are minor flaws to detract from your brand new colour coordinated bathroom. Just take the time to find the colour scheme, furniture and tiles that really reflect you and the bathroom you want to achieve.
