subject: Machinery Moving - Hiring The Right Company [print this page]

If you are in the business of industry, have heavy equipment that needs to be moved from one location to another, or simply have that one hulking piece that is beyond your capabilities (a printing press, for instance), you need a company that specializes in machinery moving. Make no mistake about it: this does not describe the vast majority of movers out there. Most have little more than a truck and a lift gate. This may not be enough to handle heavy industrial equipment that can weigh 1,000 pounds or more. To ensure that your equipment can make it to the planned destination, you need a company that has the experience and tools to get the job done. Here are some things to look for when searching for the right company.

Reputation

You can't go wrong by researching a company's reputation. Reputations are built and they can't be bought. One company may say they are experts in the field of machinery moving, but if you can't find anyone else who has ever used them and they can't supply you with any professional references, what are you to believe? Why should you let your expensive equipment serve as the guinea pig? You can't afford to do that and there isn't any reason why you should. If a company can't point to moves they have successfully completed and they have a lost list of complaints at the Better Business Bureau, you will know that your search must continue

The Tools

If a machinery moving company says they can handle the job, you should ask why they are able to say that. If they stutter and stammer or grow hostile at the thought of proving themselves to a customer, you should treat this retreat as a red flag. A company that really has a background in heavy equipment moves should have no problem pointing to the tools they will use to get the job done. This isn't something that should be done on a "we'll figure it out when we get there" basis. You aren't going to find a way to move an industrial laundry press "on the fly", after all. You either have the capabilities or you don't.

Service

Depending on your needs, your short list of machinery moving companies that can handle the job may be short indeed. That said, if you have options you should demand good customer service, just as you would from any other company in the service industry. If management seems as though they don't really want your business, than maybe they shouldn't have it. There is always someone out there willing to do the job for a fair price.
