Example:1 In a box there are 18 candies, 10 of which are lemon, 4 are apple and 4 are orange candies. Find the probability of:
a) lemon candy drawing first.
b) apple candy drawing second after lemon candy had drawn.
c) orange candy drawing third if one apple candy and one orange candy had drawn.
Sol:
a) Let S = Sample space, n(S) = 10 + 4 + 4 = 18
A be the event of lemon candy drawing first, n(A) = 10
Probability of a lemon candy drawing first:
P(A) = '(n(A))/(n(S))' = '10/18' = '5/9'
b) Let B be the event of a apple candy drawing second from remaining 17 candies, n(B) = 4
Probability of a apple candy drawing second:
P(B) = '(n(B))/(n(S))' = '4/17'
c) If one lemon and apple candy had drawn, then there would be 16 candies remaining, 4 of which are orange candies. Let S1 be the sample space and C be the event of a orange candy drawing third.
n(S1) = 16
n(C) = 4
Probability of a orange candy drawing after one lemon and apple candy has drawn
P(C) =' (n(C))/(n(S1)) ' = '4/16' = '1/4' .
Example:2 A box contains 5 brown socks, 5 black socks. If 2 socks are drawn at random, find the probability that both are brown or black socks.
