Nestled in the vast Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage. A place where natural beauty remains unspoilt and abundant, the island is a paradise for the leisure traveller. Only in few other places in the world, will you find such an impressive combination of pristine beaches, stunning hillside landscapes, historical sites and a unique culture. From UNESCO World Heritage Sites to a marvellous diversity of wildlife, the range of attractions in this charming tropical island draws travellers from all across the world.

In the south coast of Sri Lanka lies the tranquil town of Koggala. Steeped in colonial history, the town is well known for its turquoise lagoon, across which mangrove-fringed rocky islands are scattered. Travellers to Koggala can also expect to find some of the best surfing spots the island has to offer.

One of the most popular attractions in Koggala is the island known as Madol Duwa. The island received much fame after the great local author Martin Wickramasinghe wrote a novel of the same name. The book revolves around a young rebellious youth who escapes to Madol Duwa in order to leave behind the restrictive society he lived in. After a few decades a drama film was made, based on the book.

The name 'Madol Duwa' translates to mean "island of mangroves". One can take a short boat ride to the island for exploration and those who have read the book or seen the film will thoroughly enjoy a visit to the islet.

Afterwards you may also take time to visit the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum. Exhibiting the author's writings and a collection of ritualist and domestic folk objects, the museum is housed in his house itself, making the experience even more surreal.
