subject: Time To Take A Closer Look At What A Medical Clinic Is All About [print this page]

Most clinics nowadays have their own specialization; meaning, they can be classified according to the specialty of the doctor practicing his profession in it. Just to give you some examples: fertility clinics are aimed at helping out couples with pregnancy or reproduction issues; psychology clinics offer psychological services; physiotherapy clinics focus on physical therapy and similar services; and ophthalmology Their focus on specialties earned them the tag "specialty clinics". More often than not, however, when we speak of a medical clinic, most likely we are referring to a general medical practice that is run by one or several practitioners of general medicine. But what could the general public expect from a medical clinic if, unlike the specialty clinics, its area of specialization is not specified?

If you have a health problem or condition and you need to consult a doctor, have yourself examined or undergo treatment, the place to go to is a medical clinic. The conditions treated in a medical clinic range from acute minor illnesses such as back pain, headaches, allergies, sprains or broken bones, respiratory infections and minor lacerations, to chronic conditions which include asthma, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Immunotherapy is also available in most medical clinics.

But "treating" or "curing" is not all that happens in a medical clinic. It also offers preventive care to patients. If you are concerned about your cholesterol levels and want to be more prepared, you can immediately have your cholesterol screened at a medical clinic. You can also ask for a high blood pressure screening. Nowadays, most medical clinics also offer immunization to patients. You can get your flu shots directly from them. Even tetanus shots and HPV vaccines can be obtained from them. Did you know that travel vaccines are also available to those who are frequently flying or traveling from one place to another?

The large hospitals used to be the venue for general health checks and regular physicals. But now, you can have your regular checks done in a medical clinic. Even pre-operative physicals can now be done in a clinic, as long as the surgeon in charge of the actual operation gives his permission.

Medical clinics can also be expected to provide the services that are found in many of the specialty clinics we've discussed earlier. Medical clinics are now offering services related to men and women's health. True enough, you can go to a medical clinic for a gynecology exam or to have yourself tested for sexually transmitted infections. Even HIV testing can be done in a medical clinic. Even eating disorders are tackled in medical clinics, never mind that a large part of the problem is a psychological factor.

Have you ever wondered about the human resources powering a medical clinic? Of course, there are the licensed physicians and their physician assistants. They would be supported by nurses, nursing assistants and medical assistants. You can count on these medical professionals to provide topnotch service since they are representing the medical clinic they work in, just as the medical professionals in larger facilities or hospitals are also serious in doing their jobs.
