subject: What is the IELTS Exam? [print this page] What is IELTS? IELTS stands for International English Language Testing Service. The IELTS examination is taken by students who want to live, study or work in an English-speaking country, and especially by those who are going to follow academic courses at a university or similar institution, or more general training courses. It can be taken at Test Centres worldwide on fixed days through the year. The examination tests all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There are separate Reading and Writing Modules for those requiring qualifications in academic skills or more general skills. Results: You will get your IELTS results within 2 weeks of taking the exam. You will not be given a pass or a fail grade, but instead you will receive a Test Report Form giving you a score for each of the four skills, and a final overall band, which is an average or these. These band scores are expressed on a range of 0 9 and cover the whole range of language ability. For more information, look on the IELTS website www.ielts.org. Where can I take lessons? At English 4 Exams (Brighton, UK) we specialise in IELTS lessons as well as various other English language exams. Our teachers are qualified and have a vast amount of experience teaching English for exams. We offer excellent online courses, which allow students to gain access to over 600 hours of IELTS course material. By purchasing the online course, students also have the opportunity to start practicing for the IELTS exam before they even arrive in England. However, ideally we believe that face-to-face tuition together with online courses means that students will learn more and pay less. See www.english4exams.co.uk for more information.
