subject: Deep-sea Fishing Near Brisbane? [print this page]

Situated just an hour from both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Brisbane offers visitors and residents easy access to some of the finest fishing in Australia. With lakes, rivers, estuaries, beaches (and of course the open ocean!) aplenty, South East Queensland is an anglers dream.

One aquatic pastime that has seriously taken off in the last few years is deep sea fishing, and Brisbane is perfectly positioned for it. The best thing is that its now more affordable than ever, with charter boats taking individuals and groups out for a fraction of what it used to cost.

The following is a quick guide to help you pick what kind of charter is right for you, courtesy of the helpful folk at Top Catch Charters, based out of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.

What are you fishing for?

There is a huge difference between spinning a line off a canal pontoon and reeling in a 200lb marlin. Each charter company you look at will usually have a specific range of trips they do, based on what kind of boats and equipment they use.

For example, a small, weak-engined runaround might be good for the rivermouths and bays, but they arent going to be able to keep up with the bigger fish out there, and they wont offer much protection out in the open ocean.

Its important to work out what you want to catch before embarking on your adventure sometimes, people realise theyve bitten off more than they can chew!

How experienced are you?

While most fishing charters will be able to cater to experienced anglers, not all of them are ideal for beginners. If you are new to the world of offshore fishing, youll need the crew to supply the equipment and tackle, as it is prohibitively expensive to buy your own. Not all charter crews will have the manpower to keep an eye on beginners or youngsters either, so it pays to do a bit of research beforehand to avoid disappointment.

Whats your budget?

Just like anything else, fishing charters vary in quality, and you most certainly get what you pay for. While the bare minimum you need is a boat and rod, there are a lot of other essentials that can make all the difference, such as indoor quarters, full-size toilets, food and refreshment service, deck space, fish storage facilities, and so on. Helpful skippers will offer packages of different lengths (half day, full day, overnight, etc.) as well as group discounts, so be sure to do your homework if you want to secure the best deal!
