subject: Rings: Real Or Fake? [print this page]

One of the worse things that could happen to ruin what is supposed to be the happiest time in a persons life, their engagement to their significant other, would be to find out if the diamond ring that was purchased holds a fake diamond in it. There are plenty of people out there that will try to scam you in a heartbeat and they will tell you anything and everything that you want to heart just so that you will buy a ring from them. There is several different ways that you can tell if the diamonds in the ring are real or fake. Some suggestions are:

You should always look for the carat, color, cut and clarity of the diamond in the ring. You can compare diamonds with the diamonds listed on professional websites such as Gemological Institute of America.

The scratch test. Yes, we have all heard of the scratch test, and it is most definitely true to its words. If you are able to scratch a piece of glass with the diamond and it actually makes a mark, then it is a real diamond. If you scrape the gem over a piece of glass and it does nothing, then it is fake.

The fog test. When you breathe on the diamond, if it is real it will almost immediately clear. If it is a fake diamond, then the fog will stay on the ring for several seconds.

Test the diamond with an ultraviolet lightor a black light. This is a popular way to test to see if the diamond is real or fake, and that is to hold the diamond under a ultraviolet light. The majority of the diamonds will have a blue glow to them if they are genuine. But, if they do nothing under an ultraviolet light, or glow in different colors, then most likely you are holding a fake diamond.

Buy from a jeweler that has a good reputation. If you are putting a lot of your money on something, then you dont want to just go into a particular store and throw your money down on the table. If you are making a big purchase, such as a diamond ring, then you will want to do your research. Make sure that when you are looking for a jewelry store; make sure that the jewelry store than you are buying from has a good reputation.

Bring in a professional. If you are in doubt for any reason, then it can never hurt anything to bring in a professional to have your ring looked at to determine if it is a real or fake ring. You will need to look up a professional jeweler or someone that appraises jewelry to determine whether the rings are fake or not.

These are just several ways to determine if the Engagement Ring, or any ring for that matter is real or fake. You can never be too sure when making one of the biggest purchases of your life.
