The sunny island of Sri Lanka has gained a reputation for being an idyllic coastal paradise that offers plenty of fun in the sun and the surf. However, the country has much more to offer than pristine beaches and those venturing into the mountainous central region will come across an enchanting landscape hidden amidst mist shrouded mountains. Known for its breathtaking natural surroundings, this mountainous region is where one can find a variety of nature based attractions such as the Hakgala Botanical Garden.

The country's second largest garden, this picturesque area is located around 16 kms from Nuwara Eliya and is linked to the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve. Covering an area of around 28 hectares and lying amidst the backdrop of the massive Hakgala Rock, the garden offers a relaxed setting in which to unwind amidst spectacular natural beauty.

Hakgala Botanical Garden is home to approximately 10,000 plant species including roses and orchids which are highlights of this famous attraction. The Central Pond and Bulb Garden with its yellow water lilies, Mihiriya trees, Bunya pine and bulb garden which features plants from Japan and Holland is a great place to visit as is the Rose Garden where you can view exquisite rose varieties including those imported from countries such as England.

As you explore the site you will also come across a wide array of trees from around the world; Hoope pine, Jacaranda, Japanese cedar trees, Queensland box tree, Japanese silkworm Oak tree and Montezume pine to name a few. Other sights of interest here are the Glass House with its collection of begonias and cacti, the Fernery where you can view various native fern trees and the Rock Garden which features an array of plants and shrubs in a fascinating landscaped setting which also has a scenic pond with water lilies.
