subject: An Introduction To Framing [print this page]

Framing a photograph, piece of art or even sporting memorabilia and other three dimensional objects has numerous benefits for both the person framing the item, and the people who will view them. Aside from the obvious main benefit of enhanced aesthetic appeal, pictures, artwork and other items that are framed will last longer and be protected from physical damage and degradation. Essentially, it ensures the longevity of the item, whatever it may be.

What makes up a completed framed item?

The Picture/Artwork/Item

All number of items are put into frames: pictures, prints, artwork, sporting memorabilia, medals, and the list goes on!

Frame

Frames can be made from a number of different materials, including but not limited to metal, wood and plastic.

Mat Board

The mat board provides the border around the item to create a sort of "window" through which the item is view. Mat boards come in a wide range of colours and your framer will offer recommendations as to which colour is suitable for the item.

Backing Board

Like its name suggests, the backing board is the board that supports the item from behind. It is usually a neutral colour.

Glass

The glass is what protects the item from physical damage and fading from ultraviolet like. Certain glass is preferred for particular items, such as "art glass" which has viewer imperfections than regular glass.

Hanger

On the back of the frame is usually a type of hook for hanging the frame.

Tape

Tape is usually used to attach the item to the mat board. There are two different types that are typically used: acid-free tape to attach the item to the board and mylar tape to enclose the glass, mat board and backing board. Other adhesives may be used for particularly large items.
