subject: How Cosmetic Dentistry Can Give You A Confident Smile [print this page]

In America, there are millions of people who are unhappy with their smiles every day. If you are one of these people, an improvement in your smile is just an appointment with your dentist away. Over the years, cosmetic dental procedures have become more and more effective with the improvement of dental technologies. Today, there are a variety of cosmetic procedures available that can effectively improve the appearance of your teeth.

Teeth Whitening

One of the most popular methods of improving your smile is through a teeth whitening procedure. The quickest and most effective way to do this is to have your dentist perform the procedure in a single appointment in his or her office. Using a combination of whitening gel and a special light or laser, your dentist will be able to significantly whiten your teeth in less than two hours. If you do not want to spend the money on an in-office procedure, your dentist will also be able to provide you with a customized take-home whitening kit. He or she will take an impression of your teeth to create a set of whitening trays that will fit perfectly to your teeth. You will fill these with whitening gel and wear them on your teeth for about an hour each day for approximately two weeks. When this is done, your teeth will have become much whiter.

Dental Veneers

Another popular way to improve the appearance of your teeth is through the use of dental veneers. Veneers are thin custom-fitted shells of tooth-colored material that are directly attached to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. To put veneers in, your dentist will first need to remove about millimeter of enamel from the front of your teeth to create enough room for your veneers to fit comfortably in your mouth. After taking an impression of the area, your veneers will be created in a dental lab. Your dentist will then permanently cement the veneers into place to complete the procedure. Your veneers will be able to cover up any small gaps in your teeth as well as any stains.

Dental Crowns

If you have a single tooth that is chipped, cracked or otherwise disfigured, your dentist will most likely use a dental crown to fix the problem. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is directly installed on top of your tooth to improve its strength, shape, size and/or appearance. Your dentist will reduce your current tooth, take an impression and then finally attach your permanent crown. Once installed, a crown will both function and look like any of your natural teeth.
