In this day and age, most of us, take a lot of things, for granted; least of all, the mats that are placed in front of all our houses. Most people that, not much attention is required, when it comes to choosing them. Most peoples stance on the whole, is Welcome mats required, is something that can be debated upon for ages. People argue that it isnt necessary due to the fact that if you are waiting to come in, then why should some thing welcome you, instead of a person? It seems foolish to suggest that Welcome mats arent necessary at all. After all, they are a vital part of every household. It is something without which any house just feels incomplete.

Before we move any further let us look at what Welcome mats are? We have come a long way, from the way mats were before. The earliest mats were constructed by interlacing blades of grass, placed at a 90 degree angle and commonly comprised of a check pattern or weave. In order to provide the mat with some much needed strength or padding, extra layers of material were placed upon the woven blades. The intention was to bend back each blade, a full 180 degrees. The materials that were used then were strips of Sotol and blades of Sacahuisti grass. On rare occasions, a mixture of the two, were employed. Both these materials were pliable and strong. So, they were the perfect choice, when it came to weaving mats.

But, both materials had a common fault, they dried and were easily broken, if they became bent. But as time has passed, all these flaws have been overcome. Doormats are now made from tough, long-lasting material, which are able to withstand a lot of pressure for a very long period of time. This ensures that they are not worn out very easily and dont constantly require replacing, both of which, are never a good thing. Nowadays, Welcome mats have almost become flawless, when it comes to design. Add to that, the fact that Welcome mats now come in a variety of patterns, shapes and sizes.

Generally speaking, the whole definition of what Welcome mats are, have changed over the period of time. Nowadays, a door-mat is a flat, rectangular object placed inside or outside the door of a house or an office, to allow people to scrub or wipe the soles of their shoes before entering. Doormats are called as Welcome mats, when they are at the entrance of the house and also constitute a "welcome" to the visitors.

Now, you might wonder as to why, there is a need for Welcome mats, given the fact that the guest is merely going to trample over it and not take too much notice of it. The need for Welcome mats arises from the need to be forthright and welcoming to guests, more than anything else. Welcome mats are a quintessential need of every household, due to the fact that they are but a token of appreciation; a gesture, inviting the guests, into the place. When a visitor sees that, they take it as a sign that the host wants them to feel welcomed and at home.
