The park is near Nan Haizi (the Southern Marshes) and was a favoured hunting ground of emperors from the Qing, Ming and Yuan dynasties, who would come there to hunt rabbits, deer and pheasants. It serves as a sanctuary for many different types of animals including its namesake, the milu deer.
The milu deer (known by several other names including elaphure and Pere David's Deer) became extinct in China during the Qing Dynasty, at the close of the 19th century. Around twenty milu deer were reintroduced in 1985, taken from several zoos in Europe. The deer population currently stands at around two hundred. The deer no longer exist in the wild and are only found in captivity.
In addition to the milu deer one can find around four hundred other animals here. Milu Yuan also attracts a large number of migratory birds. The park contains a maze and special plots where park members are allowed to raise vegetables, free of chemicals like herbicides and pesticides. The World Extinct Wildlife Cemetery is a park highlight, and aims to educate visitors on the troubles of most endangered species. The park is open from 8 am to 5.30 pm. It is located at Nan Haizi Milu Yuan in Daxing Qu and is easily accessible by bus. There is a small entrance fee charged.
