subject: How Photovoltaic Panels Generate Electricity [print this page]

Photovoltaic panels, also called solar panels, are an easy and innovative way to reduce your energy bill. They are able to harness the power of the sun and turn it into electricity for your home, business or recreational vehicle. The word photovoltaic comes from "photo", meaning light, and "voltaic", meaning electricity.

A photovoltaic panel is comprised of a collection of solar cells mounted with a layer of silicon under non reflective glass. These are placed in areas that receive a lot of direct sunlight, such as on top of a roof. When the sun's rays strike the panel, photons react with the electrons in the silicon. This gets them excited and they begin to move, creating directional current. This current is then channeled into your home as electricity.

Because photovoltaic panels are directly dependent on radiation from the sun to function, they are only recommended in areas that have a higher solar insolation, or a greater percentage of sun exposure. Factors such as shade, clouds, rain and too few hours of daylight will noticeably impact the efficiency of solar panels.

There are many advantages to installing a solar power system in your home. These include:

Saving money on monthly power bill. In some cases the savings can be as much as 75% off your usual bill.

Qualifying for government tax rebates and incentives. Both state and federal programs exist to encourage more citizens to take advantage of solar power.

Doing your part to help protect the environment. Solar energy is an infinitely renewable resource, unlike traditional electricity which is produced from coal, oil, natural gas and nuclear power.

If you are unsure if solar power will work well in your home or business, contact a skilled electrician who has experience in photovoltaic panel technology. They will be able to walk through the process, from installation and maintenance to filing all necessary government paperwork.
