The distance covered on this route is 21 km, but it takes more time, around 1 hour, as the road passes through some very busy towns like Ghatkopar, Vikroli, Bhandupa and Mulund before reaching Thane. Moreover, the roads are congested and potholed.
The Eastern Express highway route is wider and well-maintained. As it goes through uninhabited area the distance is covered in 30 minutes, even though the distance is more, around 25 km.
Both the routes are toll roads and one has to pay around Rs. 30 for one way and Rs. 55 for a return journey.
One can also take a bus from Mumbai to Thane. One can take a BEST bus to the toll on the Eastern Express and from there TMT buses ply to Thane. Luxury buses BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) buses ply from Mumbai to Thane every 15 minutes. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses ply to the Thane railway station west every 15 minutes.
Most of the private buses that come in from various parts of the country will have a stop in Thane.
The best way to travel from Mumbai to Thane is by train. Thane falls on the Central Railway Suburban Line. There are many local trains, both slow and fast, that stop at Thane.
Thane is also well served by long distance trains, many of which stop at Thane station en route Mumbai. Madurai Express (11043), Indrayani Express (11021), Intercity Express (12127), Deccan Express (11007) and Udyan Express (16529) are some of the express trains from Mumbai that stop at Thane.
Roha Diva Passenger (71096), Ratnagiri Dadar Passenger (50104), Pandharpur Mumbai (51028), Sainagar Shirdi Mumbai (51034) and Bijapur Mumbai Fast Passenger (51030) are a few passenger trains that connect Thane and Mumbai.
There are no direct flight connections between Thane and Mumbai as there is no airport at Thane.
