subject: Natural Remedies Are Home Grown Wisdom [print this page]

Conventional medicine has been around less than 200 years. Thats not to say it doesnt have value. The diagnostics are phenomenal and emergency care has assisted many to survive and lead normal lives. Surgery has made many advances, and neonatal units take care of babies who wouldnt otherwise make it.

Medical development has wiped out smallpox. Yet today, there are concerns about safety in vaccines as many have foreign proteins and possible toxic preservatives. Fifty years ago, it was rare to find a case of autism, now the numbers are about 1 in 100 children will be diagnosed. Why? Fifty years ago one only had about 10 vaccinations in their life, now, a baby has that many in the first year of their life.

Many hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved because of the development of sulfa drugs and antibiotics. What wasnt known are the long-term side effects? Antibiotics are overused and becoming ineffective as bacteria and virus mutate.

I was impressed at a very young age by home remedies. I remember every morning my lovely Aunt Dell had her cup of clear tea. This was hot water, half of a lemon squeezed into the water and a teaspoon of honey, black strap molasses or maple syrup. She would sip it and soon thereafter, trot off the bathroom for her morning constitutional. Many years later, I can smile at her ritual of taking care of her colon. The lemon and honey helped clear mucus out of the system as it stimulated her bowels.

Another natural remedy is hydrogen peroxide. It is a natural disinfectant that works well as a mouthwash. Use 10 drops in a couple ounces of water to gargle and rinse. This is beneficial for the mouth and teeth and reduces infection with a sore throat. If you are going to swallow it, please get food grade hydrogen peroxide and keep it refrigerated.

While were talking about our mouth, using just a dab of salt (I prefer sea salt) on ones toothbrush can be helpful for periodontal problems. This can also be viewed as prevention for dental concerns. Of course, if ones salt consumption has been restricted, this isnt suggested. Its amazing how refreshing it is to use.

One could write a book on natural remedies. What is takes is a bit of common sense and just a little thought. What worked for our grandparents was based on tried and true remedies that were very inexpensive and easy to use.
