subject: Ways To Lose Weight [print this page]

As lifestyles are becoming more erratic, more and more people are becoming conscious of the way they look. Irregular meal times, increase in the rates of drinking among both men and women and lack of adequate sleep among a large section of the people who work have all contributed to weight problems. The tendency to have junk or fried food when eating out is also a common one. Hence, it is not surprising that obesity is becoming a factor of worry for many people.

When attempting to lose weight, people often randomly follow just about any diet plan, look up exercises and start doing them. Sometimes, they even buy instructive CDs for exercising. It is not a common occurrence that these efforts go in vain or have negative effects. This is why it is always advised to consult a specialist when one wants to lose weight. The starting point should be to read up material from books, magazines or the internet which tell one about the concept of ideal body weight. There are standard charts which give an average idea of what should be a persons ideal body weight according to the height. These will be different for men and women, from one age group to another as well as, from one race and ethnicity to another.

Minor variations from the ideal weight, such as the difference of a few kilos or pounds, must not be taken into consideration. If and when there are major changes, one must visit a specialist. This may be a dietician or a yoga instructor or a trainer in a gym. One must be careful as to check this persons background and must go there only after careful consideration.

The specialist will then check the person for any other problem and get any test done if needed. He or she will then prepare a diet chart for the person and prepare an exercise routine as well. These need to be followed meticulously to reach positive results. However, the dream of becoming slim overnight is a mere dream. Attempts at doing it must also be avoided. Crash diets can cause serious harm and lead to permanent damage in certain cases.

Similarly, exercising without expert supervision can lead to anything from a muscle sprain to a fracture.

There are, however, some general rules which can be followed by anyone who wishes to lead a healthy lifestyle and lose weight. Some of these are:

Avoiding fried foods

Avoiding junk food

Not skipping any meal, especially breakfast

Following the good old saying, Breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a prince and take dinner like a pauper

Trying to have dinner before 8 pm

Early to bed and early to rise does make a man healthy, if not wealthy and wise

Exercising every day

Combining different kinds of exercise, such as walking, swimming, yoga etc. and having separate days for each

Trying to reduce eating out. In unavoidable circumstances, sticking to salads, and fresh healthier dishes

Reducing the intake of alcohol

Avoiding sweets

The efforts to lose weight need not essentially be for looking good. They also need to be followed for a longer, healthier life.
