subject: You Can Achieve Facial Balance And Rejuvenation Through Plastic Surgery [print this page]

If you consider your chin small, you may benefit from chin augmentation. Having a larger (or "stronger") chin can help balance one's appearance, creating equal weight in the upper, middle, and lower thirds of the face. It can offset the prominence of a large or even medium-sized nose. Enlarging the chin can also make the neck look longer and more graceful, and this can be a helpful addition to a facelift when there is blunting of the angle between lower neck and the under-chin region. Post surgery, the chin will protrude further from the face. This can make a substantial change in the appearance of some people. The hollow between the lower lip and the chin may become deeper.

There are two ways a chin augmentation can be performed. In the first way a plastic implant can be placed via an incision under the chin or one in the mouth. The second way is by way of an incision in front of the lower teeth, the bony chin can be cut free from the lower jaw and slid forward. This is a way of using the body's own tissues to produce the desired change. Either way, the operation is usually done under general anesthesia.

Post surgery, tapes are placed around the advanced chin for a few days. For the pain, mild narcotics are given usually for 3 or 4 days. If there is a wound in the mouth, you will be on a liquid diet for two days and then soft foods for a few days.

Another plastic surgery procedures that may enhance your face is the browlift. In the browlift, the eyebrows are lifted, mostly at the outer ends, and the muscles that make the "frown lines" between the eyebrows are removed or at least weakened. As the eyebrows are raised, extra space appears between the eyebrow and the upper eyelid crease. This operation usually reduces the horizontal lines across the forehead as well.

If your eyebrows are settling down on the forehead and crowding your upper eyelids, you can benefit from a forehead lift. If you have horizontal forehead lines or furrows between the eyebrows that is another sign that a forehead lift will help.

Some plastic surgeons use the endoscope, essentially a TV camera on a tube, to see under the skin, so the incisions (and therefore the scars) can be limited to several lines extending straight back from the hairline, each less than an inch long. No shaving of hair is required. Under the skin, the tissues are freed. The lift is maintained by placing internal sutures through the deep tissues and securing them through small tunnels through the outer bone of the head. This operation is usually done under general anesthesia.
