subject: Amboseli Daily Day Trips: Amboseli National Park Day Trip Safari [print this page]

The Amboseli national park day trip starts from Nairobi by dawn to be able to get there by 9:45am. The Amboseli one day trips start down Mombasa road where you start to see wildlife grazing in the private ranches immediately you leave the city boundary. The scenery to Amboseli national park is one of the best with undulating slopes of the Kapiti plains and the Masai people and their livestock.

Amboseli Park has several attractions including the view of mt Kilimanjaro which AfricaEUR(TM)s highest mountain. The Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen in the morning with its bald rocky snow covered summit bearing overhead above Amboseli in a majestic shape. For the longest time, the poster picture of an elephant herd grazing in front of the snow capped Kilimanjaro in the background has been the signature portrait of a real African safari adventure.

There are over 1500 elephants in Amboseli national park which is also the biggest draw factor to this park. The Amboseli national park has the highest density of elephants which are concentrated in a small area measuring 50 sq km near the permanent swamps of Amboseli. These swamps get their water from underground springs that emanate from the thawing ice caps of Kilimanjaro that travel through millions of volcanic lave tubes and filtered to a pure cool and fresh water stream. The elephants just love to drink and play in these swamp waters.

Lake Amboseli is also a big attraction in this park and this is a seasonal lake which is very dry and patched during the hot season. The lake bed creates some interesting mirages of blue water complete with drinking animals and birds flying around. At midday, you will see tens of whirl winds and dust devils swirling around the lake bed in ghost white twisters that end as soon as they start. These dust devils gave the park its name from the Masai word EUR~empuselEUR(TM) meaning a place of salty dust.

Your Amboseli one day trip will also take you to the observation hill which an easy climb and gives you a panoramic view of the whole park. You can take very nice pictures of everything in this park from here. You will also have your picnic lunch here as you enjoy the view from a glass viewing blind. Take it all in and you will return to Nairobi in the afternoon at 3:00pm.

You can alternatively chose to go to Nakuru on your day trip which is the biggest bird spectacle in the whole world with over 2 million flamingos and more than 400 other bird species. The park also has rhinos and leopards and lions which are easy to spot among other animals. If you are into real active adventure, you can venture to mt Longonot for a 3hr hiking tour in this active volcanic mountain located at the floor of the great African rift valley. Later you will be taken to Lake Naivasha for an optional boat ride and end up in Nairobi. Ask you travel agent for other choices of things to do while in Nairobi Kenya.
