subject: The Importance Of The 10 Commandments
[print this page] Because the 10 commandments are listed back in the Old Testament, there are many Christians who believe they no longer apply to us existing in the New Testament. However, Jesus particularly mentioned if He came down to us, He did not come to take away with his Father's laws from back in the OT, but to fulfill them.
The following is this most important verse:
"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-20)
Notice Jesus says these moral laws will stay in their place right up until heaven and earth pass away.
There is a huge difference between the moral laws God gave the Jewish people in the OT and a few of the formal laws He gave them. A few of these formal laws will have no use for people these days in the NT, but each of the moral laws are still in full play.
Main point here - if God the Father goes to the effort to speak to with a man on top of a mountain to give him 10 extremely special commandments, then literally has these 10 special commandments written on a piece of stone by His own hand, you know this is something that should be applied very, very seriously and not thrown away for the reason that we are now existing in the NT.
Such 10 commandments are presented direct to us by the Lord are extremely special and they'll all help keep us on the straight as well as narrow road with Him. They'll serve as a good compass and guide in this life as to just what we should be doing in our walk with the Lord and what what we should be staying away from.
