subject: How Cosmetic Dentistry Can Give You A Smile To Be Proud Of [print this page]

For a variety of reasons, your smile can become less attractive over time. If you are one of the millions of people in America that are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth, you should consider talking to your dentist about cosmetic dentistry. Over the years, there have been some tremendous advancements in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Today, there are a variety of cosmetic options available to you that can effectively improve the appearance of your teeth. Don't hesitate to talk to your Boston dentist about cosmetic dentistry if you are unhappy with your smile.

Dental Veneers

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures available is the installation of dental veneers on your teeth. Veneers are thin custom fitted shells of tooth-colored material that are attached to the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. To put a set of veneers in, your dentist will have to remove about millimeter of enamel from the front of your teeth. After taking an impression and sending it to a dental lab, your permanent veneers will arrive about 2-3 weeks later. Your dentist will do a final check for fit and coloring and then cement them in place. Once your veneers are attached, they will cover up any stains or small gaps in your teeth and give you an improved smile.

Teeth Whitening

Another effective way to improve your smile is through a teeth whitening procedure. The quickest and most effective way to do this is to have your dentist perform the procedure in a single appointment in his or her office. Using a combination of whitening gel and a special light or laser, your dentist will be able to significantly whiten your teeth in less than two hours. If you don't want to spend the money on an in-office procedure, your dentist can also provide you with a customized take-home whitening kit. He or she will take an impression of your teeth to create a set of whitening trays that fit perfectly. Once you get them home, you will fill them with whitening gel and wear them for about an hour per day for approximately two weeks, at which point your teeth will be much whiter.

Dental Crowns

If you have a single tooth that is chipped, broken or otherwise disfigured, your dentist can repair your tooth with a dental crown. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is installed on top of your tooth to improve its size, shape, strength and/or appearance. To put a crown in, your dentist will first reduce the tooth to make room for the crown. After taking an impression of the area, your permanent crown will arrive from a dental lab after several weeks. Your dentist will then cement it into place to complete the procedure. Once installed, a dental crown will both look and function like any of your normal teeth.
