The capital of the United States, Washington DC, is often overlooked as a holiday destination. However, the city has a lot to offer in terms of museums, historic monuments and memorials. The trip along the National Mall can give a view of the Capitol, Washington Monument, the White House and Lincoln Memorial which are iconic and world famous. Today, the city is considered to be a great destination for shopping, dining and enjoying nightlife.

Being a capital city, many international airlines, such as British Airways, Air Canada and Air France, fly to the city. Travelers can check the reservations offices of these airlines for cheap tickets to Washington DC. Most of the times, they will not be disappointed. Budget travelers too can look at low cost airlines to get cheap flight tickets to reach this destination without burning a hole in their pocket. It is best to check airline promotions and deals to get cheap tickets.

One of the best parts of coming on flights to Washington DC is the ability to take a walking tour. The city offers many options for walking tours, with some lasting for 2 hours, while others are for 6 hours. These tours take visitors to all important monuments and buildings, such as the Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery. For people, who do not want to walk and take in the sights, there are trolley tours available. These tours are also fun, as they happen in the evenings. It is nice to the FDR Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial as the sun is setting.

Most of the buildings in the city are not high rise buildings as there is an Act of Congress that regulates the height. However, visitors can go to the Pilgrim Observation Gallery, which is in the National Cathedral, to get a 360-degree view of the city. On the ground floor of the Cathedral there are free organ demonstrations that take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 12.30 pm. The architecture of the cathedral is also worth admiring, especially the carved head of Darth Vader on the top of the northwest tower. Be sure to carry a pair of binoculars to get a glimpse of this head!

While the city boasts of over 50 museums, most of these are specifically meant for adults. However, children will enjoy visiting the National Air and Space Museum where they can see the Apollo 11 command module and old flying machines. There is even a planetarium show with the characters of Sesame Street as well as an air travel themed story time.

Coming on cheap flights to Washington DC and not visiting the White House is impossible. President Obama and his wife, Michelle, have opened up more areas of the White House, so this makes an exciting tour. Visitors can now visit the China Room and also check the tableware of John Adams and George Washington. Visitors are also allowed to visit the South Lawn, so that they can see the President"s helicopter arrive and depart. At times, the Secret Service agents offer guided tours of the residences within the White House.
