subject: Why Are Twisted-pair Cables Needed And How Do They Work? [print this page]

One of the major reasons why Twisted Pair Cables are universally preferred for various industrial applications is flexibility. Twisted Pair Cables comprise of a wiring system in which the single circuit consists of two conductors which are twisted together to resist electromagnetic interference (EMI) from outside sources.

Twisted Pair Cables are extensively used in the media and entertainment industry for their good insulation features. The grounded shield of braided wires further help in the reduction of electrical and radio frequency interference.

Twisted Pair Cables are extensively used in Ethernet networks. Most of the standard Twisted Pair Cables are less susceptible to interference and help in incorporating more data applications. The external sources cannot easily interfere as Twisted Pair Cables cancel out the electromagnetic interference.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cables, type of Twisted Pair Cables, are used for diverse applications pertaining to telephone systems and Ethernet networks. The arrangement and pairing of UTP cables is done in such a way that it reduces the problems of cross talking.

In another type of Twisted Pair Cables i.e. the Shielded Twisted Pair Cables, the arrangement is done in such a way that these avoid the electromagnetic interference from external sources. There are many varieties of Twisted Pair Cables available. The most common are Shielded Twisted Pair (STP or STP-A), Screened Twisted Pair (SCTP or F/TP) and Screened Shielded Twisted Pair (S/STP or S/FTP). Shielding which involves the use of Single Pair Twisted Cables or group of twisted pair of cables is known as screening.

There is yet another kind of Twisted Pair Cable used in many applications, which is called FTP (Foil-Shielded Twisted Pair). In such kind of a cable, there are four twisted pairs shielded by a foil. FTP cables offer high performance in environments where electro-magnetic interference is a big issue.

Most of the Twisted Pair Cables are flexible which provides for easy applications, for instance, stringing up of twisted cables between walls. Twisting helps in the application of many different lines which use the same duct. An Unshielded Twisted Pair is very feasible when compared to other types of cable. The use of Twisted Pair Cables helps in noise reduction which is a common occurrence in electrical applications.
